The YWCA School-Age program for youth ages 5 to 13 provides a wide range of enrichment opportunities including:

  • Urban Explorers, a program of the YWCA and the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Youth Opportunities Program, allows middle-school-age boys and girls the chance to explore the great outdoors through day and overnight trips that develop wilderness skills.
  • Fun and interactive nutrition instruction that helps youth understand the importance of healthy eating, enjoy health snacks and help with food preparation. Information provided is shared with the entire family.
  • Sports, skill-based sports instructions in our gymnasium or adjacent Campagnone Common emphasize teamwork and allow youth to explore a variety of options, from volleyball and basketball to floor hockey, baseball, track and field, and swimming in our heated, full-size pool.
  • Tutoring and homework assistance provided by YWCA staff and volunteers help youth stay on top of their school work and improve school performance with a focus on literacy, math, science and social studies.
  • Much of our tutoring takes place in the Computer Room, where children have access to a variety of educational games and instructional programs.

Our Infant and Toddler program for ages 1 month to 2.9 years and our Early Learning Center (ELC) for ages 2.9 to 5 years, provide young children with exposure to a variety of enriching and skill-building activities, with a focus on early literacy.  Children enjoy:

  • Weekly walks to the nearby Lawrence Public Library for story hours and storytelling, along with visits from Raising a Reader, which provides take-home books for children and parents to enjoy together.
  • Visits to Campagnone Common, located just across the street, where children enhance motor skills and the ability to follow directions as they enjoy traditional games such as tag and Duck, Duck, Goose, visit the Farmers Market or enjoy the new playscape.
  • January Term fun with volunteers from Brooks School who assist classroom teachers, providing extra hands for story hours, art projects and physical activities in the gymnasium and pool.
  • Learn-to-Swim classes for ALL children in ELC, using the American Red Cross curriculum, which emphasizes skill building, water safety and physical activity.
