Shelter Services Background
In January 2014, we took a monumental step by establishing an Emergency Intimate Partner/Domestic Violence Shelter in Merrimack Valley, Massachusetts. This initiative was born out of a deep understanding of the critical need for resources and support for women seeking refuge from the shadows of domestic violence and abuse.
In September 2013, the MA Dept. of Children and Families (DCF) entrusted us with a contract to revive and manage a previously dormant shelter in the Merrimack Valley dedicated to domestic violence victims. At that time, the state had fewer than 135 beds available statewide to provide shelter for survivors and their children as they fled abusive situations. By breathing new life into this shelter, we expanded the resources available to address this urgent issue.
Before its reopening, this shelter had been closed for a challenging 18 months and had fallen into disrepair. Collaborating closely with DCF, we embarked on an extensive refurbishing project involving substantial renovations to the shelter and the provision of new furnishings. The transformation of this property began in late fall and was completed just before the New Year. With the arrival of new furniture at the end of December, our dedicated staff swung open the doors to welcome survivors and their children in early January. Remarkably, we reached total capacity within a mere 48 hours. Today, the shelter is a secure and updated haven where residents can embark on the courageous journey of rebuilding their lives, free from the shadows of home violence and abuse.
