Empowering Inner-City Girls at the YWCA Girls Center
Building Confidence, Skills, and Success
At the YWCA Girls Center, we provide inner-city girls from Lawrence, aged 5 to 14, with the guidance they need to experience success. Our programs focus on building confidence, skills, and perseverance, enabling these girls to make healthy, safe choices during adolescence and beyond.
Inspiring Programs Led by Experienced Staff
Led by our experienced staff, Girls Center programs are designed to blend learning, exploration, and celebration. We aim to help girls develop academic, physical, and social skills that lead to success. Girls can enroll in various age-appropriate after-school, summer, and evening programs throughout the year.
After School and Summer Opportunities
Our afterschool and summer programs offer a range of empowering opportunities, including:
Girls-only activities such as swimming and sports
Summer field trips and chances to meet female community leaders
Prevention programs to guide girls away from dangerous behaviors and foster healthy relationships
Introduction to technology and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) programming
Face-to-Face and Camp Her experiences
Face-to-Face combines traditional camp activities like swimming and kayaking with discussions on crucial topics for adolescent girls, such as navigating social media, resisting peer pressure, and making informed choices.
Family Fun and Bonding
We believe in involving families to celebrate achievements, explore new skills, and enjoy quality time together. Our Mother/Daughter nights provide an uplifting opportunity for moms to strengthen connections and open lines of communication with their teenage daughters. The entire family is also invited to our annual awards ceremony, where girls are celebrated for accomplishing their goals throughout the year.
